Tim Meehan on Queensland’s Most Watched Criminal Law Case

tim meehanIt’s been a fascinating week within the Queensland criminal justice system, which has seen a flurry of words between the Chief Justice of Queensland, Tim Carmody and Judge Margaret McMurdo who it seems have had a major fall out over the alleged conduct of the Chief Judge in meeting with child abuse campaigner Hetty Johnson during the time that he and Judges Fraser and McMurdo were discerning the appeal of Brett Cowan, the man found guilty of the murder of Daniel Morcombe.

Consequently this led to Cowan’s defence team bringing an application to have Judge Carmody remove himself from the appeal process on the basis of a perception of bias, which then led to Justice McMurdo’s criticism of Justice Carmody and it all unravelled from there, culminating in Judge Carmody’s stepping down from the appeal.

In this podcast, Bosscher Lawyers’ Tim Meehan reflects on the week that was, the tenets of our criminal justice system and the role of a good criminal lawyer who works within it.
